"Raqs Sharqi, the space between the social and performative" with Sarah Safi Harb (LB/NL)

In this special online event, unique Raqs Sharki (bellydance) teachers from around the world come together to support women and families affected by the humanitarian crisis in Lebanon.

While dancing together in the RAQSoul Spring Niche Series we honor the roots of this art form, supporting the work of the Women’s Humanitarian Organization (PWHO), helping displaced women and communities rebuild safety and hope.

The teachers’ team features a selection of wonderful and unique artists of the community, niche voices with fresh inspiration, strong roots, and so much to share.

Growing up in Lebanon, Raqs Sharqi was part of the culture and Sarah's upbringing.

Sarah integrates her Lebanese background, knowledge of Yoga and holistic dance practices in her classes.

For over 10 years she has been researching Middle Eastern and North African dances and practices.

Sarah's vision is that every person has their own way of movement and dancing, she encourages people to find their own style and express their uniqueness. As it doesn’t matter how you dance, but how you feel and what you express while dancing!

Raqs Sharqi / Baladi is a dance practiced socially amongst so many North African and Middle Eastern countries. Something enjoyed, loved, and passed down from generation to generation. Then, there is Raqs Sharqi as a performative art. Something that is loved, enjoyed, yet also frowned upon. One side holds power and communal healing, the other holds technique, wonder and dedication. How to bridge that gap? In this workshop, we open that space of exploration.
